Saturdays Fencing is a great way of getting physically and mentally fit. This
is a fast and exciting combat sport, where you can feel the excitement
of combat in complete safety and fight against an opponent where no virtual
computer game can ever match. The fencing classes consist of young fencers ranging from 9 to 15 years of age, from total beginners to those fencing for a number of years. Senior junior fencers have competed in ACT and NSW competitions over the years and have appeared on stage in some CDDC End of Year concerts. Classes consist of warm ups and stretching to prepare the body for fencing. Next is the footwork to develop balance and speed. Mobility is a major in factor in the game of fencing. Simply put, your opponent can not hit you if you are there to be hit. After this activity attention is focus on bladework. Bladework is what fencing is mostly about, to defend and attack with a single blade and to guide the weapon in precise movements to either defend against an attack or deceive your opponent’s defence. Games and bouting follow bladework to help develop their footwork and
bladework skills. Most bouting is done without the aid of electronic
scoring devices to encourage correct hits on the opponent. Electronic
devices are used to prepare young fencers for competitions.
